Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Darlene Harris is looking into a new way of paving city streets. Harris recently went to Akron, Ohio to watch as road paving crews used a machine that recycles asphalt and uses it to repave the streets immediately. The machine first heats the asphalt and then scraps it up and mixes it with an oil based solution before repaving the street with it. New asphalt lasts 7-10 years while recycled asphalt can last 5-7 years. The city projects that if it were to use the new system on twenty miles of repaving then the city could save $2,275,000 annually. Before any action can be taken on changing the way city streets are paved the mayor must approve it.
