Parents of students at The Schreyer Honors College at Penn State University are sending letters to other parents inviting them to make donations to the school that will go into a scholarship fund for students in need.
Last year was the first year. Parents raised $224,000. The scholarship money only goes to other students at the Honors College.
Dean Brady said they are not asking the students to give up the scholarships they have earned but rather asking the parents that are more financially secure to give money to help students in need. The amount the parents are asking for is $3,500.00, the same amount incoming first year students get.
