Six years ago he narrowly lost to then Republican U.S. Senator Arlen Specter in the GOP Primary. Now former Congressman Pat Toomey has defeated the man who beat Specter in the Democratic Primary in May.
Toomey topped Democratic Congressman Joe Sestak 51% to 49%....a margin of about 77,000 votes statewide. Toomey said that Sestak, a former 3 star U.S. Navy admiral served his country honorably.
Speaking at an Allentown-area hotel, Toomey told his supporters the people of Pennsylvania have spoken...."I think there's a mandate to focus on economic growth. The 2 big messages of my campaign were to focus on economic growth and the job creation that goes with it and restoring fiscal discipline and balance in Washington."
Sestak conceded defeat in a speech at a suburban Philadelphia hotel in his Congressional district...."you know if someone said to me, start it all over again and you'd know how the ending was going to be, start that year and a half again, even knowing the ending, I'd do it in a heartbeat."
Toomey rode a wave of voter discontent over high unemployment and President Barack Obama's administration to defeat Sestak.
