A power outage has caused the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium to close today.
Zoo spokeswoman Connie George says no animals have been injured during the outage because the zoo has an emergency procedure in place, including backup generators and alarms for staff.
George says a broken power line fell onto the zoo’s main power line at about 10 o’clock last night to cause the outage.
George says its unclear what the total cost is to the zoo, but the problem should be fixed before tomorrow.
George says since the aquarium is the area most affected by an outage, it has its own generators that turned on automatically. She says the zoo also rented additional generators for warm-weather animals like giraffes, elephants, and lions.
