A union official with Western Penitentiary (SCI-Pittsburgh) says 8 guards have been suspended without pay because of an unspecified ethics investigation. However, state prison official are unwilling to confirm or deny that. David Mandella, vice president of the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, says one guard has missed 75 working days without being told specifically what's being investigated. A spokeswoman says the Superintendent at SCI-Pittsburgh has declined to comment on the investigation.
Mandella says the guards are appealing their suspensions to the Pennsylvania Civil Service Commission.
U.S. and Allegheny County prosecutors are not commenting on whether they are involved in the investigation.
