Protest Highlights UPMC Tax Breaks
Save Our Community Hospitals, an organization that has been vocal about the closing and demolition of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Braddock, held a rally today to protest UPMC's non-profit status and the tax exemptions that go along with it. SOCH gathered outside UPMC's headquarters downtown. SOCH chairperson Tony Buba says UPMC's local contributions don't amount to much - "that $100 million, whatever they do for the Pittsburgh Promise, is peanuts compared to what they should be taxed." UMPC announced the closing in the fall of 2009. A judge approved the demolition of the facility in October 2010. More information on the closing of UPMC Braddock can be found here.
