The United Nations Environment Program has named Pittsburgh the host city for World Environment Day 2010 in North America. The theme is “Biodiversity: Connecting with Nature.”
Local government officials, businesses and organizations will work with the United Nation's Environmental Program Regional Office for North America to come up with and schedule events during the six weeks that “bridge the gap” between the 40th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 and World Environment Day on June 5.
Pittsburgh was chosen because of its successful transformation from an industrial city to a present-day model of green economy industries, organizations and initiatives.
Bayer Corporation, based in Pittsburgh played a role in Pittsburgh’s selection.
Similar events are held in 6 other cities in the different continents.
