Pittsburgh Standoff Over, Suspect in Custody

A standoff is over in the Stanton Heights section of Pittsburgh but not before at least 5 city police officers were wounded. A police official at the scene speaking on the condition of anonymity said that 3 of the officers were killed. Police Chief Nate Harper would only say that 5 officers were "seriously wounded" but would not confirm any deaths at this time. Chief Harper said that the incident began when officers responded to a domestic disturbance at 1016 Fairfield Street and the 23 year old suspect opened fire from a window. Harper says the suspect kept police at bay using two rifles including "an assault rifle" and that kept medics from responding quickly to the wounded officers. One witness reported hearing hundreds of shots. Chief Harper says negotiators were finally able to talk with the suspect who surrendered about 4 hours after the incident began.
