A "Travel Matters Rally" was held today in station square to increase awareness about proposed state budget cuts to the travel and tourism industry. Representatives from the travel and tourism industry were on hand to speak about the economic benefits that travel and tourism brings to the region. The two budgets that have been proposed in Harrisburg each call for a cut to the spending on travel and tourism in the state.
The travel and tourism industry is the second largest industry in the state, employing 77,000 people in the Pittsburgh region alone. Travel and tourism also produces tax revenues for the state.
Industry supporters said that the proposed cuts in funding would seriously damage the industry and would have a negative impact on the state's tax revenues and local economies throughout the state.
