The $29 billion budget Governor Ed Rendell proposed today boosts overall spending by 2.5% over the current year's original spending amount, but it trims $977 million in expenditures. The governor is proposing eliminating 101 line items and reducing another 346.
Under these cuts, the Scranton State School for the Deaf and the Scotland School for Veterans' Children in Franklin County would close. Funding would be eliminated for the Pennsylvania Public Television Network as well as fro the anti-drug education program DARE. Health literacy, upgrades to child-care centers and a summer program for artistically and academically talented high school students would be zeroed out. In previous budgets, similar line items were eliminated but were often restored by the legislature in the budget negotiating process.
