At the most inopportune time, the largest of five greenhouses in Allegheny County, located in South Park, burnt to the ground last Friday night.
"They were ready to be planted and they all went up in flames," said Allegheny County Parks Director Andy Baechle. But he said he is thankful that no one got hurt since fire occurred during after hours. It has yet to be determined how the blaze started, but vandalism is not likely.
Baechle said the flowers were supposed to be distributed to the county airport, International Airport, several local hospitals, the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial and all nine county parks. They are trying to make up for some of the losses by using flowers from the other remaining greenhouses, and Baechle said they have also received some donations.
