The Indian Consul-General for the Northeast is in Pittsburgh for the Silk Screen Asian-American Film Festival. He also took the occasion to meet with Indian and American businessmen and academics to strengthen his country's ties in the region.
Prabhu Dayal says terrorist attacks in Mumbai last November proved that all democracies are threatened by the ascendance of terrorist groups in Pakistan, but because India is right next door, it is more aware of a danger getting out of hand.
Dayal says he's aware of great sympathy among Americans for the thousands of people who died or are still suffering from a toxic gas leak in Bhopal India 25 years ago. (See WDUQ's coverage.) However, he denies the Indian government was at fault and says pressure on Union Carbide to own up to its responsibility would be more to the point.
Parliamentary elections are underway in India right now that could lead to a change of party and a new Prime Minister. Results are expected May 16th.
