Another roof collapse....this time in an empty building on Pittsburgh's South Side. The Neville Ice Arena, which has been vacant since 2001, has collapsed under the weight of the snow buildup. Public Works Director Rob Kaczorowski says the building was similar in design to the Rostraver Ice Garden. That Rostraver Township facility sustained a partial roof collapse yesterday afternoon in between games of a youth hockey tournament. Everyone inside escaped safely. The cause of the roof collapse has not been determined but a fire official says the buildup of snow and ice may have contributed to it.
Kaczorowski says the heavy wet snow combined with no heat inside apparently led to the collapse of the former Neville Ice Arena. He said public safety and the Bureau of Building Inspection are expected to recommend the building be demolished and removed.
