Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection has ordered an Allegheny County landfill to investigate the source of methane gas odors.
Allied Waste Systems of Pennsylvania was fine $650,000 last month, but DEP spokeswoman Katy Gresh says complaints from teachers at nearby Wilson Elementary School let the DEP know the problem still wasn’t fixed.
Gresh says the first complaints about landfill odors came about a year ago. She says the deadline for the landfill’s investigation vary; some information needs to be in within a week while other data isn’t needed for months.
Gresh says it’s important that both the DEP and citizens continue attending advisory meetings scheduled by Allied Waste Systems.
