About a week after expressing optimism that Pennsylvania's proposal to toll Interstate 80 would be approved by the federal government, Governor Ed Rendell confirmed this afternoon that the U.S. Transportation Department has rejected the application.
Rendell said planned improvements for I-80 will not happen ..."the big loser will be the people who use I-80."
The governor projects that Allegheny County will lose $44 million a year and the Port Authority will have to cut service by 15%. Rendell was asked if there is a way to appeal or reapply....."No, the decision is what it is."
The governor said he would call a special legislative session to deal with this year's $450 million hole in the transportation budget.
