Pittsburgh Area Unemployment Numbers

Of the seven counties that make up the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, Butler County had the lowest unemployment rate in September, at 6.8%. Fayette County had the highest rate at 8.5%. All the counties in the area reported rates lower than the 9.2% national average. In the Pittsburgh area, the unemployment numbers from September 2009 to September 2010 represent roughly 90,000 jobs. Sheila Watkins, Regional Commissioner for the Bureau of Labor Statistics says the metropolitan area lost jobs in information services, gained jobs in construction and continues to shed manufacturing jobs. Allegheny County had an unemployment rate of 7.3%.
