A complaint filed Friday by The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 23 with the National Labor Relations Board says Giant Eagle has not been allowing employees to meet and discuss union issues in their stores.
Tony Helfer, president of USCW Local 23 said that for several weeks, the union has been going to Giant Eagle stores with organizers and members of Giant Eagle to talk about issues with employees who have expressed interest in joining Local 23. Helfer says they have been discouraged from meeting, have been told to leave or that the police would be called. On Thursday, Debbie Wieloch, a Giant Eagle employee who was on vacation met with two other Giant Eagle employees at the cafe at the Homestead supermarket was arrested by the Homestead Police Department.
Giant Eagle did not return calls.
