Some Giant Eagle Ice Cream Recalled
Midwest Ice Cream of Belvidere, Illinois is voluntarily recalling 56-ounce cartons of Giant Eagle Monkey Business ice cream because the product may contain peanut ingredients supplied by Peanut Corporation of America. That is the company linked to a Salmonella outbreak. The cartons are printed with a date of July 31, 2009 or earlier and a Universal Product Code of 3003403281. Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Giant Eagle has confirmed that all affected product has been removed for sale from its freezer cases and a cash register sale block has been initiated to prevent any inadvertent purchase of the affected product. Some 7,600 cartons were shipped. There have been no reports of illness from the ice cream. Anyone with the ice cream in question should discard the products and may return the package to the place of purchase for a full refund or exchange. Consumers with questions can contact Midwest Ice Cream at 1-877-234-0022.
