CDC Backlog Delays Swine Flu Confirmation Here

Test results are not back yet for the one probable case of swine flu in Allegheny County. Health Department Executive Director Bruce Dixon says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab in Atlanta is dealing with a backlog of requests for swine flu testing. He believes test results could come back late this week or early next. Dixon says by then, the man believed to have the illness will likely have recovered. Dixon says none of the man's family members have shown any symptoms.

Meanwhile, the Health Department is looking at four or five other people who have shown symptoms but are less likely to have swine flu. Dixon says the Health Department will run a few other tests on them.

Dixon says he thinks the county has done a good job keeping the public informed about swine flu without raising undue alarm. He says it's always difficult to strike a balance.
