Community Advocate to replace Deasy

Democrat Theresa Smith has won a special election by a wide margin to fill Dan Deasy's District 2 Pittsburgh City Council seat. The City Councilor-elect says she is anxious to get started, with plans to focus on blight, crime and job loss within her district and citywide.

Smith, of Westwood, says she will limit going drawing board to fix many of these problems because she has experience working on them elsewhere. For instance, she hopes to expand after school programs in her district in order to reduce crime rate, an area she has worked with alongside Pittsburgh Public School Superintendent Mark Roosevelt. Smith has been involved locally for more than 20 years.

Dan Deasy resigned from City Council after being elected to the State House in November. District 2 includes the Sheraden and Crafton Heights neighborhoods, along with sections of Mount Washington. She will finish the last year of Deasy's term. She expects to be sworn in the week of February 16th.
