Mon Wharf Landing Project Begins

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held this morning in Pittsburgh on the Mon Wharf Landing Project which includes converting part of the paring lot into a green parklet and building a bike trail along the 2,,017 foot length of the wharf.
Riverlife Executive Director Lisa Schroeder says the $2.5 million project will begin with the constructing of the trail, which is to be finished next year. She says the project in its entirety should be completed within the next two years. Between 150 to 200 parking spaces will also be sacrificed for the project.

While there is a problem with flooding, Fred Bonci, of LaQuatra Bonci Associates has been hired as the park designer. Fred Bonci ways while there is a problem with flooding on the wharf, the park will have a simplistic design that will also be sustainable for expected floods. He says he has worked with the city to be sure the park can be properly cleaned after flooding. The space will also have native plants to be aesthetically pleasing.
This is the first phase of a trail that will ultimately link Point State Park with the Eliza Furnace Trail. Funding for the project comes from state and federal transportation dollars.
