A longtime music festival organizer and folk music scholar has died at the age of 73. Nicholas Jordanoff was former artistic director of the Duquesne University Tamburitzans and Pittsburgh Folk Festival. He worked for many years as a music professor at Duquesne University. Jordanoff was also a former president of the Bulgarian Macedonian Beneficial Society, lifelong member of the Bulgarian Macedonian National Educational and Cultural Cener, and board member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Society.
Tony Mowod, DUQ's nighttime jazz host and founder of the Jazz Society, says he and Jordanoff were like brothers. They met as students at Duquesne University and were part of the group that started the Folk Festival. Mowod says Jordanoff worked hard to get more nationalities involved and would attend their rehearsals to help bring it all together in a well-organized presentation. When Mowod founded the Jazz Society in 1987, he says Jordanoff was the first person he asked to serve on the board.
Funeral arrangements are being handled through the Brusco-Falvo Funeral Home in Mount Washington. Viewing will be Thursday 6-9 pm and Friday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A funeral mass will be held Saturday at St. Gregory Orthodox Church in Homestead.
