City Council Allots $7 Million for Street Repairs
Pittsburgh City Council today affirmed a proposal which would allocate $7 million worth of city funds to the Public Works Department for street resurfacing projects. With repavement costs expected to run between $225,000 and $300,000 per mile, the city hopes to repave between 30 and 40 miles worth of roads. Which roads are selected for repavement is decided by a computer system that analyzes each of the city’s 20,000 road sections by traffic volume, condition, and last repavement. Public Works Director Guy Costa says the roads are then categorized by these traits into primary, secondary, or tertiary roads. He says certain primary roads, despite being in better condition than some secondary roads, could be paved first. Council is set to finally approve the funding next week and actual repavement is set to begin April 1st.
