AK Steel has announced today that it is laying off some of its salaried workforce because of fewer sales after the economic crisis. The company said the layoffs will affect all plants, including the Butler plant. They plan for the layoffs to be temporary, however if sales or the economy do not improve, it may become permanent. AK Steel currently employs about 1,500 salaried employees.
In the meantime, there are more cutbacks at Spanish wind turbine company Gamesa in the eastern part of the state. However, Gamesa plans to expand its Cambria county plant near Ebensburg. Spokesman Michael Peck says the Ebensburg plant is easier to expand and was built with producing larger turbine blades in mind.
