Breslube-Penn Superfund Cleanup gets Funded

A settlement filed in the U.S. District Court reads that 36 companies have agreed to fund a $12 million cleanup at the Breslube-Penn Superfund site. Money that taxpayers have spent thus far to clean the site will be reimbursed to them. EPA Region Three Community Involvement Coordinator Larry Johnson says it has been a long process, with the site being vacant now for more than a decade. He says the EPA has already developed a remedy to clean the contaminated soil and water within the property, and that the companies, including Alcoa, General Motors, and U.S. Steel, will most likely help clean the site by hiring a third party. The site had been contaminated with oil throughout the 1970s and 80's, closing in 1992.
